The intention of the huge charcoal drawings of Renie Spoelstra is to let the viewer experience an atmosphere of deliberate apathy; hours and days go by in a split second, every moment frozen in time and every moment equal to the other.

Consequently, characteristics of actual observations are diminished—making the unique more common and indefinite—so that they can function as a substitute for many similar places.

She started taking pictures of Dutch forests and recreational areas in 2001. She concentrates on what she calls the absence of climax, in the sense that nothing is actually or visibly happening. These pictures are the starting point of her drawings. Nowadays she uses (self made) film stills instead of pictures. By drawing, she searches for the desired atmosphere, using specific properties of the material.

Jeff Bailey Gallery is pleased to present Jim Gaylord, Based on True Events, an exhibition of paintings and works on paper. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in New York.

Gaylord combines scenes from big budget action movies, capturing fleeting shapes and special effects. Through the process of painting, high-speed action sequences are distilled and dramatic conflict is suspended in time. The abstract quality of these moments suggests figures and objects in a state of metamorphosis.

Gaylord collects film stills by freezing individual scenes on the computer screen. He then digitally superimposes several film stills together, creating a composite from multiple images. These become the source material for his oil paintings and gouaches, resulting in something like painted collages. “Artifacts” from fast-moving events onscreen, such as flashes, splatters and blurs, become painterly marks when depicted on canvas or paper.

In Gaylord’s Study series, sheets of acetate are individually painted in gouache, culminating in a single image. The picture is literally built from these layers and assembled on a registration peg bar, drawing similarities to the format of traditional animation cels.

Gaylord mines numerous historical period action movies for source imagery, including The Patriot, Gladiator, The Last Samurai and Pirates of the Caribbean. Suits of armor, military uniforms and period headwear reference the figure without depicting it. Landscape backgrounds with trees and open skies serve as representational foundations for the ultimately mysterious foregrounds.

In Saber Rattle, dappled light falls onto a scene of random violence. Weapons, uniforms and clutching hands jostle for position. The image and the action are in flux, but the painting gives the direction.

The title of the exhibition, Based on True Events, references its use as a popular movie tag line. Gaylord takes the fictional reality of the movies, and distorts it into his own broken narrative.
Gaylord was a 2008 Fellow in Painting for New York Foundation for the Arts and a recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant in 2005. He has had solo exhibitions at Gregory Lind Gallery, San Francisco and Alberto Matteo Torri, Milan. His work was featured in Art On Paper 2008, at The Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina, and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Progressive Art Collection, Ohio and the West Collection, Pennsylvania. He received his MFA from the University of California, Berkeley and a BA in Film from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Gaylord lives and works in New York.

Park (serie: Some Other Place)

The line between truth and illusion in photography is one that has been frequently crossed by practitioners since the invention of the medium. Sometimes that line was crossed deliberately through the use of simple techniques like double exposing the film in order to place the same individual in two different parts of the picture (a popular technique for professionals and amateurs at the end of the nineteenth century). Other times the breach of the truth was dictated by the limitations of the materials needed to produce a picture. For example, no clouds ever appeared in a sky made with orthochromatic film, and until the 1930s rarely was a scene rendered in color, which is the most obvious breach of truth in a long list of possibilities associated with the medium. With so many opportunities to bend reality, it was inevitable that practitioners from advertising photographers to artists would exploit this characteristic of the medium.

Lori Nix is an artist who bends the line between truth and illusion in her photographs. She accomplishes this by photographing miniatures and models which illuminate her interest in the disaster movies of the 1970s and her memories of growing up in Kansas—a place that seems to attract disasters like no other. In her series titled Accidentally Kansas Nix creates scenes of floods, tornadoes, snow storms, lightning strikes, and insect infestations, all epic and defining events recalled from her formative years in rural Kansas. The state of Kansas is located in the middle of the United States geographically, and also represents the moral middle of the road as a state of mind where conventional family values and good citizenship go hand in hand. By linking disasters with moral imperatives Nix allows herself to question conventional codes of society at the same time as she explores the unsettling memories of her youth.

Drawn freehand directly on the computer and printed with an inkjet printer, my drawings do not contain photographs or scanned material.

As an inherently hybrid process combining the languages of drawing and computer imaging, my practice brings together the opposite notions of handmade and technological, of organic and mechanical, of physical and virtual. Combining technology with subjectivity, the work draws the viewer to an awareness of the devices of image construction and to the complexities of fiction. In addition to dealing with familiar concepts such as drawing and photography, we are now affected by the recontextualizing effect of the new field of imaging.

Several related concerns run throughout the work: an investigation of image making, the

hybridization of the languages of drawing and computer imaging, and most importantly, a focus on the constructed landscape.

The subjects of my work may be interpreted equally as models for planned communities or as aerial views of fictional suburbs, referring to the dual role of the computer as a tool for urban planning as well as image capture. Encouraging a reflective attitude by its perpendicular and distant viewpoint, the aerial view is used here to comment on society’s occupation and transformation of the natural landscape.

In addition, the obviously invented nature of these suburbs exaggerates existing situations and drives the subject matter into the investigative domain of science fiction. Examining the relation between design and actual lived experience, the works subvert the apparent rationality of urban design, exposing conflicts that lurk beneath the surface. These digital drawings are a comment on the fears as well as the dreams expressed in suburban culture.

Set Your Receivers – Buro leeuwarden

16 december 2006 t/m 28 januari 2007

Serge Game (Tilburg, 1970) maakt prikkelende schilderijen.

www.sergegame.com

Serge Game (Tilburg 1970) calls reality into question. Using materials like paint, resin, lacquer and thread Game presents things we can’t identify. At the same time these things give us the impression that they could very well exist. Games world evokes infinity of possible meanings. His paintings are not just products of his fantasy but they stimulate the visitor’s imagination as well. They evoke stories and they suggest possible meanings. A work with two distorted and dripping abstract forms is titled: ‘Masters of reality’. This title gets to the core of the matter: being very much there the forms surpass their abstraction. They are as real as they can possibly be.
